The Deaf And The Blind:

The Deaf And The Blind:

ALLAH – IN THE NAME OF – THE MOST BENEFICENT, THE MOST MERCIFUL

Infinite blessings & peace be upon Allah’s beloved, the Holy Prophet Mohammed , his family, all his companions, and all who rightfully follow him until the day of resurrection.

The issue of addressing persons who have been buried is often a subject that evokes strong emotions and extremely conflicting opinions. It usually sparks a heated debate as to whether it is correct or otherwise to believe that those buried in the graves can actually hear those who are visiting them or calling them from afar. It is not uncommon to hear allegations of outright polytheism (Shirk) & blasphemy being hurled at each other.
In this age of neo-Kharijism it became imperative for me to write about this matter that has become the topic of hot debate. More so because of the constant bombardment of objections and misinformation that makes several rounds through the internet and other media.
If the dead do hear, then is it correct to visit the graves or call upon them for help? However, that is not the subject matter of discussion in this article.
This article will – with Allah’s help – prove that those in the graves are alive, and can hear those that address them.
For the sake of justice & fairness this article will also present & review the so called proofs presented by the opponents.

1. The Objection & Deception:

Those who oppose this fact present some verses of the Qur’an in support of their argument. They claim that these verses are regarding those Muslims who visit graves and address the saints or relatives buried there. We shall examine each, one by one.

[Raad 13:14] Only the prayer to Him is truthful; and whomever they pray to besides Him, do not hear them at all, but like one who has his hands outstretched towards water that it may come into his mouth, and it will never come; and every prayer of the disbelievers remains wandering.
The above verse is obviously regarding the idolaters (or polytheists), who pray to idols or pictures in front of them, and who worship these instead of Allah the Supreme. Therefore the claim that it is regarding the buried & dead is obviously incorrect.

[Shua`ra 26:72] He said, “Do they hear you when you call?”

The above verse is presented by the opponents claiming that the persons in the graves cannot hear. It is extremely unfortunate that they seek to deceive the Muslims by this ugly trick. For the verse is related to the preceding 2 verses in the Holy Qur’an which prove that this statement is that of Syedna Ibrahim who confronted the polytheists who used to worship the idols. The previous 2 verses are:

[Shua`ra 26:70-71] When he said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?” They said, “We worship idols, and we keep squatting in seclusion before them.”
May Allah guide them not to purposely hide the truth!

[Ruum 30:52] For you do not make the dead hear nor make the deaf hear the call when they flee, turning back.

This verse is touted by the opponents as a “strong proof” that the dead cannot hear. But my dear fellow Muslims! Read the full verse and you will note that Allah – the Supreme – is referring to those “deaf” persons who are fleeing – that is, they do not want to listen to the
Holy Prophet when he calls them! So the disbelievers can actually “hear” the call – but they are called “deaf” by Allah! So the verse is regarding the living persons, not the dead! So one may ask – what is meant by the word “dead” in this verse? In the same manner as for the “deaf”, the “dead” here refers to the “dead at heart” – because the call of the Holy Prophet was never meant for those who were buried! And once a person is buried, it is useless to preach Islam to him! We shall prove that on numerous occasions, including this one, Allah – the Supreme – has called the disbelievers as “dead” or “dead at heart”.

In fact the next verse itself makes it clear that the Holy Prophet’s call is heard only by those who believe (in the Truth), so they have become Muslims!

[Ruum 30:53] Nor do you guide the blind out of their error; you only make those hear who believe in Our signs, so they have submitted.

Here too, we have successfully exposed the deception of the opponents, in their trying to misguide the simple minded Muslims.

[Fatir 35:14] If you call them, they do not hear your call; and supposedly if they heard it, they cannot fulfil your needs; and on the Day of Resurrection they will deny your ascribed partnership; and none will inform you like Him Who informs.

The above verse is also presented by the opponents claiming that the persons in the graves cannot hear. Here again, if the full verse it read, it is obvious that this statement is regarding the polytheists who used to worship the deities as partners to Allah – and not for the buried!

[Fatir 35:22]; and you cannot make those who are in the graves listen.
The above verse is also presented by the opponents claiming that it is not possible to make persons in the graves listen. Here the treachery of the claimants can be gauged from the fact that they hide the previous words of the same verse! The full verse is as follows:-

[Fatir 35:22] And not equal are the living and the dead! Indeed Allah causes them to listen, whomever He wills; and you cannot make those who are in the graves listen.
Here again, if the full verse it read, it is obvious that in Allah’s sight, the believers are ‘living” and the disbelievers are “dead” or “in graves”. If we consider that it refers to those who are buried, even then the explanation is clear: Allah makes anyone listen within the graves – and those who cannot hear inside the graves are those whose fate has been sealed since they died as disbelievers so you cannot make them listen to and follow the truth.

We have amply proved the several ways of deceit resorted to by the neo-Kharjis, and shall further prove the Truth, in the following pages.

May Allah guide these groups not to purposely hide the truth for it is feared they could then deserve the punishment promised in the Holy Qur’an:-
[Surah Baqarah 2:159-160] “Indeed those who hide the clear proofs and the guidance which We sent down, after We made it clear to mankind in the Book – upon them is the curse of Allah and the curse of those who curse. Except those who repent and do reform and disclose (the truth) – so I will accept their repentance; and I only am the Most Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.”

2. Responding To The Call Of The Truth

THE MUSLIMS HEAR & OBEY

[Ana`am 6:36] It is only those who hear (with sincere hearts) that accept faith; and Allah will raise these people dead of heart, then towards Him they will be herded.

[Noor 24:51] The saying of the Muslims when they are called towards Allah and His Noble Messenger in order that the Noble Messenger judge between them is that they submit, “We hear and we obey”; and it is they who have attained the goal.

[Furqan 25:73] And those who, when they are reminded of the signs of their Lord, do not fall deaf and blind upon them.

[Ruum 30:53] Nor do you guide the blind out of their error; you only make those hear who believe in Our signs, so they have submitted.

The above quoted verses make it amply clear that only those who accept faith have “listened” i.e. the believers “hear” the truth and they obey.

THE DISBELIEVERS HEAR AND DISOBEY

[Baqarah 2:93] And remember when We made a covenant with you and raised the Mount Tur (Sinai) above you; “Accept and hold fast to what We give you, and listen”; they said, “We hear and we disobey”; and the calf was still embedded in their hearts because of their disbelief; say, “What an evil command is what your faith orders you, if you are believers!”

The above quoted verse is a proof that the disbelievers “hear” the truth and yet they disobey.

3. So Who Cannot Listen And Who Does

IT IS THE STONE IDOLS THAT CANNOT LISTEN OR RESPOND!

[Aa`raf 7:195] Do they have feet to walk with? Or have they hands to hold with? Or have they eyes to see with? Or have they ears to hear with? Say, “Call upon your ascribed partners and conspire against me, and do not give me respite.”

[Raad 13:14] Only the prayer to Him is truthful; and whomever they pray to besides Him, do not hear them at all, but like one who has his hands outstretched towards water that it may come into his mouth, and it will never come; and every prayer of the disbelievers remains wandering.

[Raad 13:16] Say, “Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?” Proclaim, “Allah”; Say, “So have you appointed such as supporters besides Him, who can neither benefit nor harm themselves?”; say, “Will the blind and the sighted ever be equal? Or will the realms of darkness and the light ever be equal?” Have they appointed such as partners to Allah who created something like Allah did? Therefore their creation and His creation seemed alike to them? Proclaim, “Allah is the Creator of all things, and He Alone is the Dominant over all.”

[Shua`ra 26:71-72] They said, “We worship idols, and we keep squatting in seclusion before them.” He said, “Do they hear you when you call?”

THE DEAD DO LISTEN! – PROOFS FROM QUR’AN AND HADEETH!

Proofs from Quran

The Prophets , the Truthful, the Martyrs, the Virtuous & the obedient – they are all alive!

[Baqarah 2:154] And do not utter regarding those who are slain in Allah’s cause as “dead”; in fact they are alive, but it is you who are unaware.

[A/I`mran 3:169-171] And do not ever assume that those who are slain in Allah’s cause are dead; in fact they are alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance.Happy over what Allah has bestowed upon them from His grace, and rejoicing for those who will succeed them, and have not yet joined them; for on them is no fear nor any grief. They rejoice because of the favours from Allah and (His) munificence, and because Allah does not waste the reward of the believers.

[Nisa 4:69-70] And whoever obeys Allah and His Noble Messenger, will be with those upon whom Allah has bestowed grace – that is, the Holy Prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the virtuous; and what excellent companions they are! This is Allah’s munificence; and Allah is Sufficient, the All Knowing.

The preceding 6 verses are solid proof of the post-isthmus life of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the virtuous – in fact for all who obey Allah and His Noble Messenger!

The Disbelievers can listen in their graves – but they cannot answer as they are tortured.

[Aa`raf 7:79] Saleh therefore turned away from them and said, “O my people! Indeed I did deliver my Lord’s message to you and wished you good, but you do not want well-wishers.”

[Aa`raf 7:93] So Shoaib turned away from them saying, “O my people! Indeed I did deliver my Lord’s message to you and gave you sound advice; so why should I grieve for the disbelievers?”

In the preceding 2 verses it is proven that the Prophets of their time addressed the disbelievers after they had died – as did our Holy Prophet whilst addressing the disbelievers slain in the battle of Badr.

Proofs from Hadeeth

The Prophets & Sahaba are alive, and they can listen & see from their graves.

Narrated Abu al-Darda’ : The Holy Prophet said, “Make abundant invocations of blessings upon me the day of Jum’a, for that day is witnessed by the angels. Verily, no one invokes blessings upon me except his invocation is shown to me until he finishes it.” Abu al-Darda’ said: “Even after death?” The Holy Prophet replied: “Even after death! Truly Allah Most High forbade the earth to consume the bodies of Prophets. Therefore the Holy Prophet of Allah is alive and sustained!” (Ibn Majah)

Narrated Aws ibn Aws : The Holy Prophet said: Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me. The people asked: Apostle of Allah , how can it be that our blessings will be submitted to you while your body is decayed? He replied: Allah, the Exalted, has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of Prophets (Abu Dawood)

Narrated Hazrat Ibn Umar : The Holy Prophet Muhammad said: “The one who after Hajj visits me, after my death (i.e. the Holy Rawdhah) is like one who has visited me while I was alive.” (Baihaqi, Mishkaat).

Narrated Hazrat ‘Aisha : “When I used to go in my room after my husband and father were buried there, I would take off my overcoat. I never took it off after Hazrat ‘Umar was buried. Because, he was not my near kin. I was restrained by my sense of modesty because he was there.” (Imam Ahmad and Hakim)

The Prophets are alive, and they perform prayers inside their graves!

“The Prophets are alive in their graves. They perform salaat.” (Baihaqi, Ibn ‘Asakir, Ibn Hajar)

Syedna Anas b. Malik reported Allah’s Apostle as saying: I came to pass by Moses on the occasion of the Night journey near the red mound (and found him) saying his prayer in his grave. (Muslim)

The Disbelievers are punished in their graves – but their cries cannot be heard by all.

Narrated Hazrat Abi Ayyub : Once the Prophet went out after sunset and heard a dreadful voice, and said, “The Jews are being punished in their graves.” (Bukhari)

Narrated Syedah `Aisha : The Prophet said, “They (the disbelievers killed in the battle of Badr) now realize that what I used to tell them was the truth.” And Allah said, ‘Indeed the dead do not listen to your call nor do the deaf listen to your call, when they flee turning back. (27:80) (Bukhari)

Narrated Hazrat Hisham’s father: It was mentioned before Syedah `Aisha that Ibn `Umar attributed the following statement to the Prophet “The dead person is punished in the grave because of the crying and lamentation of his family.” On that, Syedah `Aisha said, “But Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The dead person is punished for his crimes and sins while his family cry over him then.” She added, “And this is similar to the statement of Allah’s Apostle when he stood by the (edge of the) well which contained the corpses of the pagans killed at Badr, ‘They hear what I say.’ She added, “But he said now they know very well what I used to tell them was the truth.” `Aisha then recited: “[Ruum 30:52] For you do not make the dead hear nor make the deaf hear the call when they flee, turning back”. And “[Fatir 35:22]…. and you cannot make those who are in the graves listen”:that is, when they had taken their places in the (Hell) Fire. (Bukhari)

Narrated Hazrat Ibn `Umar : The Holy Prophet looked at the people of the well (in which the bodies of the pagans killed in the Battle of Badr were thrown) and said, “Have you found true what your Lord promised you?” Somebody said to him, “You are addressing dead people.” He replied, “You do not hear better than they but they cannot reply.” (Bukhari)

Kindly note that it is the disbelievers who can hear, but cannot reply from the graves, as they are being punished. However, the Muslims can reply as is proven in the Ahadeeth given below.

All Muslims in the graves are alive, and they can listen and respond!

Narrated Hazrat Abu Hurairah : The Holy Prophet said while standing near the graves of the martyrs of Uhud, “I bear witness that you are alive in the sight of Allah.” Then turning towards those present he said, “So visit them, and greet them – I swear by the One in whose power lies my life, they will answer back to whoever greets them until the Last Day.” (Hakim, Baihaqi)

Reported Syedah ‘A’isha (that whenever it was her turn for Allah’s Apostle to spend the night with her) he would go out towards the end of the night to (the graveyard of) al-Baqi’ and say: “Peace be upon you, abode of a people who are believers. What you were promised would come to you tomorrow, you receiving it after some delay; and Allah willing we shall join you. O Allah, grant forgiveness to the inhabitants of Baqi’ al-Gharqad.”(Muslim)

4. Who Are The Deaf & Blind

IT IS THE DISBELIEVERS – NOT THOSE IN THE GRAVES!

[Baqarah 2:18] Deaf, dumb and blind; and they are not to return.

[Baqarah 2:171] And the example of the disbelievers is similar to one who calls upon one that hears nothing except screaming and yelling; deaf, dumb, blind – so they do not have sense.

[Maidah 5:71] And they assumed that there will be no punishment, so they turned blind and deaf – then Allah accepted their penance, then again many of them turned blind and deaf; and Allah is seeing their deeds.

[Ana`am 6:39] And those who deny Our signs are deaf and dumb in realms of darkness; Allah may send astray whomever He wills; and may place on the Straight Path whomever He wills.

[Hud 11:20] They will not be able to escape in the earth, nor do they have any protecting friends apart from Allah; they will have punishment upon punishment; they were unable to hear, nor used to see.

[HMSajdah 41:17] And regarding the Thamud, We showed them the right path – so they chose to be blind above being guided, therefore the thunderbolt of the disgraceful punishment overcame them – the recompense of their deeds.

[HMSajdah 41:44] And if We had made it as a Qur’an in a foreign language they would have certainly said, “Why were its verses not explained in detail?” What! The Book in a foreign language, and the Prophet an Arab?! Proclaim “It is guidance and a cure for the believers”; and there is deafness in the ears of those who do not believe, and it is blindness upon them; as if they are being called from a place far away!

The above quotes 7 verses of the Holy Qur’an make it amply clear that Allah refers to the disbelievers as the “deaf” and the “blind”.

THEIR HEARTS & EARS ARE SEALED

[Baqarah 2:6-7] As for those whose fate is disbelief, whether you warn them or do not warn them – it is all one for them; they will not believe. Allah has sealed their hearts and their ears, and on their eyes is a covering; and for them is a terrible punishment.

[HMSajdah 41:5] And they say, “Our hearts are covered against the affair you call us to, and there is deafness in our ears, and there is a barrier between us and you – therefore mind your own business, we are minding ours.”

The above quoted verses of the Holy Qur’an make it evident that the disbelievers’ hearts and ears are sealed.

THE DISBELIEVERS CAN SEE AND LISTEN – YET THEY REJECT THE TRUTH!

[Yunus 10:42-43] And among them are some who listen to you; so will you make the deaf hear even if they do not have any sense? And among them is one who gazes at you; so will you guide the blind even if they cannot perceive?

[Luqman 31:7] And when Our verses are recited to him he haughtily turns away as if he did not hear them – as if there is deafness in his ears; so give him the glad tidings of a painful punishment.

The above quoted verses (among many others) of the Holy Qur’an are proof that the disbelievers can see and listen – but they purposely turn deaf and blind to guidance!

THEY HAVE HEARTS AND YET THEY DO NOT WANT TO UNDERSTAND

[Ana`am 6:36] It is only those who hear (with sincere hearts) that accept faith; and Allah will raise these people dead of heart, then towards Him they will be herded.

[Aa`raf 7:179] And indeed We have created many jinns and men for hell; they have hearts in which there is no understanding; and the eyes they do not see with; and the ears they do not hear with; they are like cattle – in fact more astray; it is they who are the neglectful.

[Hajj 22:46] So have they not travelled in the land, to have hearts with which to understand and ears to hear with? So it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts in the bosoms, that are blind.

From the above it is amply clear that the disbelievers are blind and deaf not because they cannot see or hear – but because they do not use their hearts and minds to ponder, nor do they want to be guided.

YOU CANNOT MAKE THE DISBELIEVERS HEED ADVICE ALTHOUGH THEY SEE AND HEAR!

[Hud 11:28] He said, “O my people! What is your opinion – if I am on a clear proof from my Lord and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Him, so you remained blind towards it; shall we force it upon you although you dislike it?”

[Ambiya 21:45] Proclaim “I warn you only with the divine revelation; and the deaf do not hear the call when warned.”

[Naml 27:66] Has their knowledge advanced so much as to know the Hereafter? On the contrary, they are in doubt concerning it; in fact they are blind towards it.

[Ruum 30:52-53] For you do not make the dead hear nor make the deaf hear the call when they flee, turning back. Nor do you guide the blind out of their error; you only make those hear who believe in Our signs, so they have submitted.

[Zukhruf 43:40] So will you make the deaf listen or show the path to the blind, and to those who are in open error?

Having proven in the previous section that the disbeliever purposely turn deaf and blind to guidance, Allah – the Supreme – says in these verses that you cannot guide them (these deaf & blind), because of their obstinacy!

THEY ARE WORSE THAN ANIMALS

[Aa`raf 7:179] And indeed We have created many jinns and men for hell; they have hearts in which there is no understanding; and the eyes they do not see with; and the ears they do not hear with; they are like cattle – in fact more astray; it is they who are the neglectful.

[Anfal 8:22] Indeed the worst beasts in the sight of Allah are those (people) who are deaf, dumb – who do not have any sense.

[Furqan 25:44] Or do you think that most of them hear or understand something? They are not but like the cattle – in fact more astray from the path than them!

The above quoted verses clarify that those who reject the truth – despite being sighted, hearing and having hearts – are actually worse than animals.

BLIND IN THIS WORLD AND BLIND IN THE HEREAFTER.

[b/Israel 17:72] Whoever is blind in this life will be blind in the Hereafter, and even more astray.

[b/Israel 17:97] And only he whom Allah guides, is upon guidance; and whomever He sends astray – you will therefore not find for them any supporters besides Him; and We shall raise them by their faces on the Day of Resurrection – blind, dumb and deaf; their destination is hell; whenever it is about to extinguish, We will inflame it more for them.

[Ta-Ha 20:124-125] “And the one who turned away from My remembrance – for him is a confined existence, and We shall raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.” He will say, “O my Lord, why have You raised me blind, whereas I was sighted?”

Here again Allah – the Supreme – refers to the disbelievers as “blind” – and will also raise them blind (unable to see), as a punishment on the Day of Resurrection!

5. In The Sight Of Allah

MUSLIMS ARE SIGHTED & HEARING: DISBELIEVERS ARE BLIND & DEAF

[Ana`am 6:50] Say, “I do not say to you that I possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I say that I gain knowledge of the hidden on my own, nor do I say to you that I am an angel; I only follow what is divinely revealed to me”; say, “Will the blind and the sighted ever be equal? So do you not think?”

[Ana`am 6:104] “Enlightening proofs came to you from your Lord; so whoever observes, it is for his own good; and whoever is blind, it is for his own harm; and I am not a guardian over you.”

[Aa`raf 7:64] In response they denied him, so We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our signs; indeed they were a blind group.

[Hud 11:24] The example of the two groups is like one being blind and deaf, and the other seeing and hearing; are they equal in condition? So do you not ponder?

[Yusuf 12:108] Proclaim, “This is my path – I call towards Allah; I, and whoever follows me, are upon perception; and Purity is to Allah – and I am not of the polytheists.”

[Raad 13:19] So will he, who knows that what is sent down upon you from your Lord is the truth, ever be equal to him who is blind? Only the men of understanding heed advice.

[Noor 24:51] The saying of the Muslims when they are called towards Allah and His Noble Messenger in order that the Noble Messenger judge between them is that they submit, “We hear and we obey”; and it is they who have attained the goal.

[Naml 27:80-81] Indeed the dead do not listen to your call nor do the deaf listen to your call, when they flee turning back. And you will not guide the blind out of their error; and none listen to you except those who accept faith in Our signs, and they are Muslims.

[Momin 40:58] And the blind and the sighted are not equal – and neither are the believers who perform good deeds and the wicked equal; how very little do you ponder!

In these multiple verses Allah – the Supreme – has clearly defined whom He considers sighted & hearing, and whom He considers deaf & blind.

THE DISBELIEVERS ARE BLIND & DEAF BECAUSE THEY DENY THE TRUTH

[Ana`am 6:39] And those who deny Our signs are deaf and dumb in realms of darkness; Allah may send astray whomever He wills; and may place on the Straight Path whomever He wills.

[Anfal 8:23] And had Allah found any goodness in them, He would have made them hear; and had He made them hear they would, in the end, have turned away and gone back.

[Kahf 18:101] The ones whose eyes were covered from My remembrance, and who could not bear to hear Truth.

[Jasiya 45:8] Who hears the verses of Allah which are recited to him, then remains stubborn, proud, as if he did not hear them; therefore give him the glad tidings of a painful punishment.

In these verses Allah – the Supreme – has clearly defined why He considers the disbelievers as deaf & blind.

ALLAH MAKES THEM DEAF & BLIND

[Baqarah 2:6-7] As for those whose fate is disbelief, whether you warn them or do not warn them – it is all one for them; they will not believe. Allah has sealed their hearts and their ears, and on their eyes is a covering; and for them is a terrible punishment.

[Ana`am 6:25] And among them is one who listens to you; and We have put covers upon their hearts so they may not understand it, and deafness in their ears; and (even) if they see all the signs, they will not believe in them; to the extent that when they come to you to debate with you, the disbelievers say, “This is nothing but stories of former people.”

[Ana`am 6:110] And We revert their hearts and their eyes – the way they had not believed the first time – and We leave them to keep wandering blindly in their rebellion.

[Anfal 8:23] And had Allah found any goodness in them, He would have made them hear; and had He made them hear they would, in the end, have turned away and gone back.

[b/Israel 17:46] And We placed covers upon their hearts so they may not understand it, and deafness in their ears; and when you mention your Only Lord in the Qur’an, they flee turning their backs in hatred.

[Kahf 18:57] And who is more unjust than one who, when reminded of the signs of his Lord, turns away from them and forgets what his hands have sent forward? We have put covers on their hearts so as not to understand the Qur’an, and deafness in their ears; and even if you call them to guidance, they will never attain the right path.

[Mohammed 47:23] It is these whom Allah has cursed, so He made them deaf to the Truth and blinded their eyes.

The disbelievers who constantly deny the truth & advance in their stubbornness are therefore destined never to be able to accept faith – so finally they have their hearts sealed, and are made deaf & blind! May Allah protect us!

The Conclusion

AlHamdolillah! With the above noted radiant & irrefutable evidences, we have conclusively proven the following:

The Deaf, Dumb & Blind – referred to in the Holy Qur’an – actually refers to the disbelievers, or to the idols whom they worship.

It does not refer to the Holy Prophets & saints who are buried.

The Holy Prophets and all other virtuous Muslims enjoy a life after death (called Barzakh) – prior to resurrection; i.e. they are alive in their graves. They can see, hear and reply.

May Allah guide us on the Straight Path. Aameen.

All Praise is for Allah, the Lord of the Creation. Infinite blessings & peace be upon our Master, Mohammed – the leader of the creation – and upon all the Prophets; and upon all those who rightfully follow him, until the day of resurrection.

Recitation of the Holy Quran and its Excellence:

Recitation of the Holy Quran and its Excellence

I. Hadrat ‘Uthman reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur’an.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Page752]

II. Hadrat Mu’adh al-Juhani reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “Whoever recited the Qur’an and acts according to its contents, on the Day of Resurrection his parents will be given to wear a crown whose light is better than the light of the sun in the dwellings of this world if it were among you. So what do you think of him who acts according to this?!” [Musnad aHmad, Vol 4, Page 446]

III. Hadrat ibn Mas’ud reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “Whoever recites a letter of the Book of Allah (the Qur’an) he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem are one letter; but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.” [Sunan Tirmidhi, Vol 2, Page 119 – Sunan Daarimi, Vol 2, Page 320]

There are 361, 267 letters in total in the Holy Qur’an. Thus, upon the recitation of the whole Qur’an one shall receive 3,212,670 rewards (good deeds).

IV. Hadrat Bara’ reported that when a man was reciting Surah al-Kahf, with a horse tied up with two ropes at his side, a cloud overshadowed him, and as it began to come nearer and nearer his horse began to jump. He went and mentioned that to the Holy Prophet in the morning who said, “That was the sakinah which came down because of the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Page 749 – Sahih Muslim, Vol 1, Page 268]

V. Hadrat Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that Hadrat Usaid ibn Huzair said that one night, when he was reciting Surah al-Baqarah with his horse tied beside him, it started jumping. But when he stopped reciting it also kept quiet. When he again resumed recitation it again started jumping. So he again stopped reciting and it also kept quiet. Then he again recited and the horse again started jumping. So he finished reciting, for his son Yahya was near it and he was afraid it might injure him. When he had moved him back, he raised his head to the sky and saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it; and when he told the Holy Prophet of it in the morning he said, “you should have kept on reciting, O Ibn-e-Huzair, you should have kept on reciting.” He said, “I was afraid, O Messenger of Allah that it might trample on Yahya who was near it, so I went to him, and when I raised my head to the sky and saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it, I went out but could not see them.” He asked, “Do you know what it was?” He said, “I do not.” He said, “Those were the angels who had drawn near to listen to your voice. If you had continued reciting, the people would have looked at them in the morning and the angles would not have concealed themselves from the people.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Page 750 – Sahih Muslim, Vol 1, Page 269]

VI. Hadrat Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah asked Hadrat Ubayy ibn Ka’b, “What do you recite (from the Qur’an) in the prayer?” He recited Ummul Qur’an (Surah al-Fatiha). The Messenger of Allah said, “by Him in Whose power my soul is, nothing like it has been sent down in the Torah, the Injil (Bible), the Zabur, or the Qur’an. It is the Seven oft-repeated verses and the Mighty Qur’an which I have been given.” [Sunan Tirmidhi, Vol 2, Page 115]

VII. Hadrat Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qur’an is Yasin. Allah records anyone who recites Yasin as having recited the Qur’an ten times.” [Sunan Tirmidhi, Vol 2, Page 116 – Sunan Daarimi, Vol 2, Page 336]

VIII. Hadrat ‘Ata Ibn Rabah reported, “I heard that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Whoever recites Yasin at the beginning of the day, his desires will be fulfilled.’” [Sunan Daarimi, Vol 2, Page 336]

IX. Hadrat Ma’qal ibn Yasar al-Muzani reported that the Holy Prophet has said, “Whoever recites Yasin seeking the pleasure of Allah, his past sins are forgiven. So, recite it over those of you who are dying.” [Mishkat Sharif, Page 189]

X. Hadrat ‘Ali Hadrat reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah say, “everything has an adornment, and the adornment of the Qur’an is (Surah) al-Rehman” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Page 750 – Sahih Muslim, Vol 1, Page 271]

XI. Hadrat Abu al-Darda’ reported that the Messenger of Allah asked, “Are any of you incapable of reciting a third of the Qur’an in a night?” They said, “How could we recite a third of the Qur’an?” He said, ARABIC TEXT “Say, He is Allah, One” is equivalent to a third of Qur’an.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Page 753 – Sahih Muslim, Vol 1, Page 268]

XII. Hadrat Abu Musa al-Ash’ari reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “keep revising (the learning by heart of) the Qur’an, because I swear by Him in Whose control my soul is, it is more slipping away than a camel which is tied with a rope.” [Sunan Daarimi, Vol 2, Page 325]

XIII. Hadrat Sai’d ibn ‘Ubadah reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “Anyone who recites (i.e. learns off by heart) the Qur’an and then forgets it will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection in a maimed condition.” [Sunan Abi Dawood, Vol 2, Page 207]

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. The Holy Qur’an (whether in salaah or outside) should be recited clearly, according to the rules of Tajweed. It should not be sung, as this is not allowed.

2. It is better to recite the Holy Qur’an by looking at it than off by heart. [Fatawa-e-‘Alamgiri]

3. It is Mustahab (act of great reward) to face the Qiblah, to wear nice clothes, to apply fragrance prior to the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

4. When starting the recitation from the beginning of a Surah (outside of prayer) to recite, ‘Ta’wwuz’ (Au’dhu Billahi Minash Shaytanir Rajim – I seek the refuge of Allah from Satan, the cursed) is Mustahab.

5. When starting the recitation of the Holy Qur’an from the beginning of a Surah (outside of prayer) to recite ‘Tasmiyah’ (Bismillahir Rehmanir Raheem – Allah in the Name of, the Most Affectionate the Most Merciful) is Sunnah.

6. If one has started the recitation not from the beginning of a surah but from the middle of a surah, then upon commencing the recitation to recite both ‘ta’awwuz’ and ‘tasmiyah’ is Mustahab. [Bahar-e-Shari’at – Vol. 1]

7. If one has commenced reciting from Surah al-Tawbah (al-Bara’ah) then one should recite both ‘Ta’awwuz’ and ‘Tasmiyah’. If however, surah al-Tawbah comes in the duration of one’s recitation then one should continue and not recite the Tasmiyah. The commonly misunderstood ruling that if one starts the recitation from Surah al-Tawbah (al-Bara’ah) there is still no need to pray ‘Ta’awwuz’ or ‘Tasmiyah’ is wrong. The other misunderstood ruling is that Surah al-Bara’ah (al-Tawbah) comes in the middle of one’s recitation, then one should pray ‘Ta’awwuz’ but not ‘Tasmiyah’ is also wrong. [Bahar-e-Shari’at – Vol. 1, Chapter 3, Page 309]

8. In some places, (outside of prayer) some start the recitation with: “Laqad Ja’akum Rasoolum Min Anfusikum …” But they do not recite Tasmiyah. This is wrong, as to recite Ta’awwuz and ‘Tasmiyah’ before this ayah (if this ayah is the first to be recited) is Mustahab.

9. Likewise, some in the khatm start the recitation with either of these five verses:

“Wa Ilahukum Ilahuw Wahid…” or
“Inna RehmatAllahi Qareebum minal Muhsineen…” or
“Ma kana Muhammadun Aba Ahadim mir Rijalikum…”

…but do not recite ‘Ta’wwuz’ nor the ‘Tasmiyah’. This is wrong.

10. If all the people in a gathering recite the Holy Qur’an loudly then this is Haram. Often in an Urs or Fatiha (khatm gathering), all the people recite the Holy Qur’an aloud. This is Haram. If there are a few people in a gathering then all should recite quietly. [al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Bahar-e-Shari’at]

11. When the Holy Qur’an is recited loudly in a gathering then it is obligatory on all the people present to listen, if the reason for the gathering was to recite the Holy Qur’an. Otherwise, if only one person listened to the recitation, then it is sufficient regardless if the others are busy in their work or not. [al-Ghunniyah, Fatawa-e-Razawiyyah, Bahar-e-Shari’at]

12. It is Fard-e-Kifaya to memorise the whole of the Qur’an. To learn off-by-heart Surah al-Fatiha and another small surah or three short verses (ayat) equivalent in length to one short surah or one long verse equivalent to three short verses is Wajib-e-‘Ain (necessary for each person individually, to learn).

13. One should differentiate in pronunctiation the following letters, when reciting the Holy Qur’an: ARABIC LETTERS Tha, Sin, Shin, Swad, Ta’, Twa, Dha, Za, Dwa, Ża, Alif, A’ (hamza), ‘Ain, Ha (from the throat), ha (lighter), Qa’, Ka’, Da’ and Dwa’, Jim, and Za’. Otherwise, if one did not pronounce each and every letter correctly with its unique characteristic, then the prayer will not count because of the changes that shall be made in the meanings due to incorrect pronunciation. [Bahar-e-Shari’at]

14. Those who are not able to pronounce letters correctly such as Ha’ (from the middle part of the throat), Twa, ‘Ain, Swad and so on, should try their utmost best, in fact it is obligatory that they make an attempt to rectify their recitation so that the pronunciation of the letters is correct. Otherwise, namaz will be rendered void. [Fatawa-e-Radwiyyah Vol. 3 Page 95 and in Radd al-Muhtar Vol. 1 Page 409]

15. We see many teachers in madressahs who have not learnt how to pronounce each and every letter of the Arabic alphabet correctly, according to its unique characteristic. Moreover, they have not acquired the knowledge pertaining to the correct way of the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, by neglecting the rules of Tajweed. [Some teachers recite the letters Arabic text dha’, za’, zwa’ asjeem; qaf as kaf; sheen as seen; ghayn as gaaf. This is an act of great sin.] Therefore, what they teach children is incorrect and they shall be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection for teaching others the incorrect manner of reciting the Holy Qur’an. In fact, some even touch the Holy Qur’an without being in the state of purification. This is indeed strictly forbidden and Haraam, as Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has clearly stated in the Holy Qur’an:

لا يمسه إِلا المطهرون
“which none do touch, but the purified ones.” [Surah:56 – al-Waqi’ah, Verse:79]

16. Many who have memorised the Holy Qur’an off-by-heart (have become hafiz) recite the Holy Qur’an in such a hastily manner that one cannot differentiate between the letters, let alone the words! Such that one can only hear the ya’lamun and the ta’lamun and the rest of the words are not recited correctly. On top of this, the common folk feel pride in these huffaz saying that “such and such a person can recite the Surah in 1 minute!” to recite the Qur’an in such a hastily manner is strictly unlawful and Haram. [Bahar-e-Shari’at – Vol. 3 Page 306]

17. It is permissible, without any disapproval, to recite the Holy Qur’an in those times in which to perform salaah is Makruh-e-Tehrimi. These times are:

Approximately twenty-minutes after sunrise.
At zawaal time (mid-day) till the beginning time for Zohar.
Approximately twenty-minutes before sunset.
However, it is better that one does not recite the Holy Qur’an in these times. One should recite durud sharif (invoke blessings and salutations upon the Messenger of Allah) instead. [Bahar-e-Shari’at Vol. 3 Page 230, al-Bahr al-Ra’iq Vol. 1 Page 251, Radd al-Mohtar Vol. 1 Page 262]

Kissing the Thumbs:

Kissing the Thumbs

When hearing the Muazzin proclaim, “Ash’hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah” it is preferred (Mustahab) to kiss the two thumbs or the shahaadat finger and place them on the eyes. There are many spiritual, religious and worldly benefits associated to this, as well as numerous Ahadith documenting its practice. Doing so is even practiced by the Sahaaba, and Muslims everywhere perform it in the belief that it is Mustahab. It is stated in the book, Salaat al-Mas’oodi:

روي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم انه قال من سمع اسمي في الاذان ووضع ابھاميه على عينيه فانا طالبه في صفوف القيمه و قائده الى الجنه
”The Noble Messenger is reported to have said, “On the Day of Qiyaamat, I shall search for the person who used to place his thumbs on his eyes when hearing my name during the Adhaan. I shall lead him into Jannat.” [Salat al-Mas’oodi, Vol 2, Chapter 20]

Allama Ismail Haqqi Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho writes under the verse 58 of Surah al Maidah,

“Kissing the nails of the thumbs and the shahadat finger when saying “Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has been classified as weak (zaeef) because it is not proven from a marfoo’ Hadith. However, Muhadditheen have agreed that to act upon a zaeef Hadith to incline people towards deeds and instill fear within them is permitted.” [Tafseer Rooh al-Bayaan, Vol 3, Page 282]

Shaami states,

“On the testimony (of Prophethood) in Adhaan, it is Mustahab to say “Sallallaahu Alaika Ya Rasoolallah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam on the first and “Quratu Aini bika Ya RasoolAllah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala on the second. Then, place the nails of your thumbs on your eyes and say, “Allahumma Matti’ni bis-Sam’i wal-Basr.” The Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam will lead the person who does this into Jannat. The same has been documented by Kanzullbaad, Qohistaani and in Fataawa Soofia. Kitaabul-Firdaus states that the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has said, I shall lead into Jannat the person who kisses his thumbnails when hearing “Ash’hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah. I will also place him amongst the ranks of the inmates of Janna’. The complete discussion on this has been given in the marginal notes on Bahr ar-Raaiq of Ramli.” [Radd al Muh’tar, Baab al-Adhan, Vol. 3, Page 233]

This extract has given the reference of 5 books Kanz al-Ibaad, Fataawa Soofia, Kitaab al-Firdaus, Qohistaani and the marginal notes on Bahr ar-Raaiq. All of them have ruled this practice to be Mustahab.

In the book “al Maqasid al Hasanah Fil Hadisil Atwirah Alas Sunnah”. Imam Sakhawi Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho states,

“Dailmi reports that Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho once said ‘When I heard the Muazzin say Ash’hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, I said the same, kissed the inner-side of my Kalima finger and placed it on my eyes. When the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam noticed this, he said. My intercession becomes obligatory upon he who does the same as my beloved.’ This Hadith hasn’t reached the classification of Sahih.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 384]

Quoting the book Moojibaat ar-RaHmah, Imam Sakhaawi Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho further writes.

“It is reported from Hadrat Khidr Alaihis Salam , “If a person says “Marhaban bi-Habibi Quratu Aini Muhammad ibn Abdullah” when hearing the Muazzin say “Ash’hadu anna Muhammadur-Rasoolullah, then kisses his thumbs and places them on his eyes, never will they (the eyes) be sore.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 384]

He further writes that Abul Abbas Ahmad said that Muhammad ibn Baabaa, narrating his personal experience, states.

أنه هبت ريح فوقعت منه حصاة في عينه فأعياه خروجها وآلمته أشد الألم وأنه لما سمع المؤذن يقول أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله قال ذلك فخرجت الحصاة من فوره
“Once, due to a heavy wind blowing, a pebble hit my eye and refused to come out. I experienced major pain because of it.” When Muhammad ibn Baabaa heard the Muazzin say “Ash ‘hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah, ” he said this “Quratu Aini … ‘and, immediately, the pebble fell out.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 384]

Allama Shams Muhammad ibn Saalih Madani Alaihis Salam reports Imam Amjad to have said.

من صلى على النبي إذا سمع ذكره في الاذان وجمع أصبعيه المسبحة والابهام وقبلهما ومسح بهما عينيه لم يرمد أبدا
“If the person who hears the name of the Noble Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in the Adhaan joins his Kalima finger and his thumbs,” “Kisses and places them on his eyes, never will they be sore.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 384]

Imam Amjad Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho who was an accomplished scholar in Egypt, further states,

“Some non-Arab and Iraqi Mashaaikh have said that by this practice, the eyes will never be sore.” “From the time I have brought this into practice even my eyes have not ached.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 384]

Ibn Saalih Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho states,

وأنا ولله الحمد والشكر منذ سمعته منهما استعملته فلم ترمد عيني وأرجو أن عافيتهما تدوم وأني أسلم من العمى إن شاء لله
“From the time I heard this benefit. I brought this action into practice. Since then, my eyes haven’t become sore and it is my hope that, Insha-Allah, they will never be and I will be saved from being blind.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 385]

Imam Hasan Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho states,

من قال حين يسمع المؤذن يقول أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله مرحبا بحبيبي وقرة عيني محمد بن عبد الله ويقبل إبهاميه ويجعلهما على عينيه لم يعم ولم يرمد
”The eyes of he who says ‘Marhaban bi-Habibi wa Quratu Aini Muhammad ibn Abdullah’ when hearing the Muazzin say “Ash’hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah and kisses and places his thumbs on them will never pain nor will he become blind.” [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut – Lebenon), Page 385]

In short, the book alMaqaasid al Hasanah confirms this practice by many Imams and Scholars of the Deen.

Sharah Niqaaya states,

“It should be known that it is preferable (Mustahab) to say “Quratu Aini bika Ya Rasoolallah and place the thumbs on the eyes when hearing the first part of the second shahaadat. The Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam wilt lead the person who does so into Jannat. Kanz al-Ibaad says likewise.” [Jami’ ar-Rumooz, Fasl al Adhan, Maktaba Islamiya (Iran), Vol 1, Page 125]

Maulana Jamaal ibn Abdullah ibn Umar Makki Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho states in his Fataawa,

تقبيل الابھامين ووضعھما على العينين عند ذكر اسمه عليه السلام في الاذان جائز بل مستحب صرح به مشائخنا
“Taqbeelul-Ibhaamain (kissing and placing the thumbs on the eyes when hearing the blessed name of Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in Adhaan) not just permissible, but Mustahab. Our Mashaaikh have elucidated this.”

Allama Muhammad Taahir Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho classifying this Hadith as Ghair-Sahih, also states,

وروي تجربة عن كثيرين
“There are many reports of this benefit being experienced.” [Khatima Majma’ BiHar al-Anwaar, Vol 3, Page 511]

There are many other quotations besides these that can also be presented. For the sake of conciseness. we make do with only these. Hadrat Sadr al-Afadhil, Maulana Sayyed Muhammad Na’eem al-Din Muraadabadi states that a very ancient copy of the Injeel (New Testament) has been discovered. It is known as the Gospel of Barnabas and has been translated into almost every language. The majority of its rulings and laws resemble Islamic commands. It’s written inside that when Hadrat Adam Alaihis Salam wished to see the Noor of the Beloved Mustapha SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam (Rooh al-Quds). The Noor was made bright on the nails of his thumbs. Hadrat Adam Alaihis Salam then kissed and placed them on his eyes out of love and appreciation.

Besides the Ulama of the Hanafi Mad’hab, Ulama from the Shafee and Maaliki Mad’habs have also ruled the kissing of the thumbs (Taqbeel al-Ibhaamain) to be Mustahab. A famous Shafa’ee book of Fiqh, I’aanatut-Taalibeen ‘Alaa Hali alfaazi Fat’hil-Mu’een, states,

ثم يقبل ابھاميه و يجعلھما على عينيه لم يعم ولم يرمد ابدا
“Then kiss and place your thumbs on your eyes. By doing so, never will you become blind nor will your eyes be sore,’ [I’aanatut-Taalibeen, Page 247, Egyptian Edition]

Another famous book of the Maaliki Mad’hab, Kifaayat at-Taalib arRabbani Ii Risaalati Ibn Abi Zaid Qeerwaani Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho, after saying much about this practice, states,

عينيه لم يعم ولم يرمد ابدا
“Never will the eyes of the person who does so pain, nor will he become blind.” [Kifaayat at-Taalib ar-Rabbani, Vol 1, Page 169, Egyptian Edition]

Shaikh Ali Saeed Adawi Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho writes in his commentary of this extract,

“The writer didn’t mention when the thumbs should be kissed. However, it is reported that some people met Allama Mufassir Nooruddin Khorasaani Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho at the time of Adhaan. When he heard the Muazzin say “Ash’hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah he kissed and placed his thumbs on the eyelashes and comer of his eyes, right until the temples. He did this on every shahaadat. When the people asked him about this practice of his, he replied, “I used to kiss my thumbs but stopped after a while. My eyes later became sore. I then saw the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in a dream and he said to me, “Why did you stop kissing your thumbs and placing them on the eyes during the Adhaan? If you want your eyes to stop paining, resume this practice.” Thus, from then on, I continued this action and gained comfort. The pain didn’t return from the time I recommenced this.” [Nahjul-Istamia, Page 177]

Important Note: Direct narrations and Ahadith have been presented regarding this practice in Adhaan. Takbeer (lqaamat) is in the likeness of Adhaan, and it has even been called Adhaan in the Ahadith. Therefore, kissing and placing the thumbs during the Takbeer is also beneficial and a means of blessings but during Salah or a Khutba or whilst listening to the Qur’an it should not be done!

Not performing it during salah is evident and the impermissibility during listening to the khutba or the Qur’an is because one should have utmost attention at these times and refrain from any unnecessary movements. When the verse Maa kaana muhammadun abaa ahadim mir rijalikum is recited, so many people kiss their thumbs, it is as if birds have gathered to sing and they do it to such an extent that people from afar cannot even hear some words of the holy Qur’an. Even if there is no harm to place the thumbs on the lips and then place them on the eyes at this time; there is no ruling to make a sound during the kiss of reverence – like when one kisses the black stone, the ka’aba, the Qur’an or the hands and feet of the pious. There is no rule to make the noises like a flock of birds.

Conclusion:

This entire discussion establishes that kissing and placing the thumbs during the Adhaan, etc. is Mustahab. It is found as the Sunnat of’ Hadrat Adam Alaihis Salam, Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho and Imam Hasan Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anho. Even Imams of the Shafa’ee and Maaliki Mad’habs have ruled it to be Mustahab. In every era, Muslim deemed this practice to have this very ruling, along with the following benefits,

The eyes of a person who does this are saved from being sore.

1. Insha-Allah, he will never become blind.
2. It is an excellent cure to remove something problematic to the eyes. These benefits have been experienced several times.
3. The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam will intercede for the one who practices this.
4. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam will also search for the person who used to perform it and lead him into Jannah.

As long as no explicit proof of its prohibition is found, It cannot be stopped. Muslims deeming something preferable (Mustahab) is sufficient proof for it being so. However, for certification of Karaahat (i.e. to deem something Makrooh), a specific proof is needed! So, Calling this practice Haraam is sheer ignorance and an act of prejudice and strait-mindedness of a person afflicted with the blindness of Faith (Eiman). May Allah protect us from falling to this depth of depravity and deviation from the right path… Aameen!!

والله سبحانه وتعالى اعلم ورسوله اعلم بالصواب
Almighty Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala and His Beloved Rasool Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam knows the best!

History of Meelad un Nabi (S.A.W) Celebrations:

History of Meelad un Nabi Celebrations

Another trick (Irony) that opposition use to attain is saying that some ignorant people from India and Pakistan of the last few decades have invented the celebrations of Mawlid an-Nabawi Sharif being influenced by the Hindu Celebration culture and It was never ever celebrated before in previous ages and bla bla bla. Let them have some glimpses of facts from the very true history.

History of Celebrating Mawlid an-Nabawi Sharif
1. Hadrat Allama Mulla Ali Qari narrating the routine of the people of Madina Munawwarah writes,

“The people of Madina Munawwarah (May ALLLAH have Mercy on them) used to arrange and attend mawlid gatherings with great enthusiasm and sincerity on the occasion of Mawlid Sharif.” [Mawrid ar-Rawi Fi Mawlid an-Nabawi, Page 29]

2. Ibn Jauzi says:

“People of Haramain Shareefain (Makkah and Madinah) and Egypt and Yemen and Syria and of the eastern and western cities of Arabia hold functions in celebration of the birth of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam), they rejoice at the sighting of the moon of Rabi al-Awwal, bathe and put on their best dresses adorn themselves in various ways, put on scent, and give alms with great joy, and exert themselves in listening to the Mawlid of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam). By doing so, they themselves attain to success, as it has been proved that by celebrating the Mawlid of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) much good accrues the whole year round, security and comfort, greater means of livelihood, increase in children and in wealth, peace in cities and contentment and peace in homes.”

3. Gatherings of Mawlid an-Nabi SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam was switched to Prose in 3rd/4th Hijri then 700 years back from today, A pious and virtuous person named Umer bin Mullah Muhammad Mousli Alaihir RaHma established it on regular basis. Following him the great commander Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi’s dearly loved Sultan Arbal Malik Abu Saeed Muzaffar al-Din celebrated Mawlid an-Nabi officially. Ibn-e-Khalqaan Arabali Sha’fai was eyewitness of that festival.

4. According to “Tarikh-e-Mar’at az-Zaman” billion of rupees were used to spend on those festivities. In the beginning of 7th Century of Hijri Calendar; Great Scholar named Abul Khattab Umer Bin Hasan dah’hia Qalbi Andalusi Balansi wrote a book on the topic Milad an-Nabi SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam named “At-Tanveer Fi Mawlid as-Siraj al-Muneer”. In 1207, He went to Sultan Arbal’s castle and presented his book on Mawlid to him, for which he was awarded thousand Gold Coins from Sultan. This was the status and respect of Mawlid Shareef in hearts of earlier leaders of Islam.

5. Not only Sultan Arbal, King of Egypt celebrated the Mawlid Shareef; Allama Ibne Juzri Alaihir RaHma is one the eyewitnesses. For the celebration of this festival 1000 Mithqal of Gold was spent on it. Sultan Abu Hamu Musa Talamsani and earlier rulers of Aqsa and Andalus used to Celebrate Mawlid an-Nabi SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. Abdullah Tonsi Summa Talamsani has written the details of these festivals in his book “Raah al-Arwah”.

On the eve of Mawlid an-Nabi SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam celebrations are observed in Makkah and dwellers of Makkah name this day as Youm al-Eid Mawlid ar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. People use to cook food. Ameer of Makkah and Commander of Hijaz with their army use to visit birthplace of Prophet Peace be Upon Him and recites Qasida there. Rows of shining candles are positioned from Haram al-Makki to Birthplace and Shops and Houses on the way are also decorated. People use to recite Qasaid whole day at Birthplace. On the night of 11th Rabi al-Awwal after Isha, Mawlid Gathering is organized. From Maghrib prayer of 11th Rabi al Awwal to Asar Prayer of 12th Rabi al Awwal, after every prayer Salutations of 21 tanks is presented.

In Haramayn (i.e. Makkah Mukarrama and Madina Munawwarah), in Egypt, Yemen rather all people of Arab world have been celebrating Mawlid for long. 12. Shah Waliullah Dhelvi mentions one of his all time wonderful experiences as:

I took part in a gathering of Mawlid inside Makkah where people were sending Darood and Salam upon Prophet (Peace be upon him) and commemorating the incidents which took place during the time of the blessed birth (before and after) and those which were witnessed before He was appointed as a Nabi (such as Noor eliminating from Bibi Amina Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha, she seeing Noor, woman proposing to Sayyiduna Abdullah Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anho on sighting the Noor on his forehead etc…) suddenly I saw Noor to have enveloped one group of people, I don’t claim that I saw this with my bodily eyes, nor do I claim that it was spiritual and Allah knows the best regarding these two, however upon concentration on these Anwaar a reality opened upon me that these Anwaar are of those Angels who take part in such gatherings, I also saw Mercy to be descending along with Anwaar of Angels. [Fuyudh al-Haramayn, Pages 80/81]

13. Shaykh al-Islam Imam Ibn Hajr al Haytami (Rahimuhullah) writes:

The gatherings of Mawlid and Adhkaar which take place during our time, they are mostly confined to good deeds, for example in them, Sadaqat are given, Dhikr is done, Darud and Salam is sent upon the Prophet (SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam) and he is praised. [Fatawa al-Hadithiyyah, Page 202]

14. The 7th-century historians Shaykh Abu al-Abbas al-Azafi and his son Abu al-Qasim al-Azafi wrote in their Kitab al-Durr al-Munazzam:

Pious pilgrims and prominent travelers testified that, on the day of the Mawlid Shareef in Makkah al-Mukarrama, no activities are undertaken, and nothing is sold or bought, except by the people who are busy visiting the noble birthplace, and rush to it. On this day the Holy Ka’abah is opened and visited.

15. The famous eighth-century historian, Ibn Battuta relates in his Rihla that

On every Jum’uah after the Salah and also on the birthday of the Beloved Prophet Alaihis Salat wa as-Salam, the door of the Holy Ka’abah is opened by the head of the Banu Shayba the doorkeepers of the Holy Ka’abah while on the Mawlid Shareef, the Shafi’i head judge of Makkah al-Mukarrama, Najm al-Din Muhammad ibn al-Imam Muhyi al-Din al-Tabari, distributed food to the descendants of the Beloved Prophet Alaihis Salat wa as-Salam and to the people of Makkah al-Mukarrama.

16. The historian Shaykh Ibn Zahira from his Jami al-Latif fi Fadli Makkata wa-Ahliha; Shaykh al-Haytami from his book al-Mawlid al-Sharif al-Muazzam; and the historian Shaykh al-Nahrawali from al-Ilmam bi-Alam Bayt Allah al-Haram says:

Each year on the twelfth of Rabi al-Awwal Shareef, after Maghrib Salah, the four Qadhis of Makkah al-Mukarrma (representing the Four Sunni Schools) and large groups of people including the jurists and notables of Makkah al-Mukarrma, Shaykhayn, Zawiya teachers and students, magistrates and scholars, leave the Mosque and set out collectively for a visit to the Noble Birthplace of the Beloved Prophet Alaihes Salato Salaam, shouting out Dhikr and Tahlil.

The houses on the route are illuminated with numerous lanterns and large candles, and a great many people are out and about. They all wear special clothes and they take their children with them.

Inside the Noble Birthplace, a special sermon for the occasion of the birthday of the Beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam is delivered. Hereafter the Dua’ for the (Ottoman) Sultan, the Ameer of Makkah al-Mukarrma, and the Shafi’i Qadhi is performed and all pray humbly.

Shortly before the ‘Isha prayer, the whole party returns to the Great Mosque, which is almost overcrowded, and sit down in rows at the foot of Maqam Ibrahim.

A similar description is given by Shaykh al-Diyar Bakri (d/960) in his Great Sirah entitled Ta’rikh al-Khamis fi Akhbari Anfasi Nafis.

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Beloved Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do well… Ameen!!

Misconceptions and Misunderstandings About Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) OR Mawlid Al Sharif

The Real Bid’a (innovations)!

Jazakallah u Khair

For some time, the Islamophobes have been trying to create a negative image of Islam. They badmouth about our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the holy Qur’an.  They have been trying their best to misguide people. They fabricate lies and attack on our beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him). Therefore, it is critical for Muslims to unite and give a united response to the hate-mongers. However, unfortunately, the reality is that the current Muslims are deeply divided even on those practices and beliefs that no one in the entire Muslim world has ever disputed for more than 13 centuries. Instead of focusing on the real issues of the Muslim Ummah we are wasting time and resources in countering each other on the issues which had never been issues.  Every year in the month of Rabi Al Awwal, one of the most useless and misguiding campaign is carried out against the celebration of Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) also called Mawlid– the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). As Rabi-Al-Awwal approaches, the annual campaign of Fatawa and speeches against celebrating the Birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) starts. What a waste!

Bid’a (innovation)

The people who oppose celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) argue that it should not be celebrated because the Prophet himself and his companions after him did not celebrate his birthday. According to these opponents, celebrating the Prophet’s birthday is an innovation in Islam, and the Prophet (peace upon him) has forbidden creating innovations in Islam.  An innovation in Islam is called Bid’a.  In their opinion, the Prophet’s birthday was not celebrated by the Prophet and neither by his companions; therefore, it is an innovation (Bid’a) and must be avoided.  For them it’s a sin.

Nature of Fatawa Against Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace upon him) OR Mawlid

There is not a single verse in the Qur’an OR a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) forbidding the celebration of Prophet’s birthday. However, those who oppose the birthday celebration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) quote many verses from the holy Qur’an and Hadith giving an impression to the less knowledgeable Muslims that it is forbidden.  They twist the meanings and insert their own biased opinions in Qur’an and Hadith. A few weeks ago, a brother gave me a fatwa handout against celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). He said, “there are several references from Qur’an and Hadith in the handout against Eid-Milad-un-Nabi”.

When you read those fatawa and handouts, you will never find a single verse from Qur’an or a single Hadith in which Allah OR His Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade to celebrate the birth of the Prophet (peace be upon him).  It is always a twisted interpretation of those verses from Qur’an and Hadith which are not even related to the topic. This is the deception, which ordinary Muslims do not understand. They just see the NUMBER of references made from Qur’an and Hadith not knowing that these references have nothing to do with Eid-Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The opponents of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi purposely misquote and misinterpret Qur’anic verses and the Hadith of Prophet (Peace be upon him) in order to misguide Muslims just like Qadyanis who twist the meanings and the interpretation of the verses of the holy Qur’an and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to justify the legitimacy of their false Prophet.

What is Eid-Milad-un-Nabi / Mawlid?

Eid-Milad-un-Nabi means birthday of Prophet (peace be upon him). The Muslim celebration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is quite different from the Christian Celebration of Christmas, the birthday of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him). What do Muslims do on the day of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him)? They organize gatherings in which Muslims discuss the birth, the life and the message of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). They feed the poor and the guests. They read the Qur’an and learn Qur’an from scholars. They praise Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and sing Naat / Nasheed (poems / rhymes). They reach out to non-Muslims and inform them about Islam.  The day is celebrated with purely religious and spiritual aspects of an Islamic life.  At this occasion Muslims remind themselves to love and follow Allah’s last Messenger (Peace be upon him) in daily life. Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him) is just like any other religious get-together of Muslims for the remembrance of Allah and His beloved Messenger (Peace be upon him).

If a gathering that discusses the birth, the life (SEERAH) and the message of Prophet of Islam is a Bid’a (distortion in Islam) because the Prophet himself and his companions (Peace be upon them) did not organize or ask people to organize such gatherings then we should not be doing any thing in the name of Islam that was not done by the Prophet (peace be him) OR his companions (May Allah be pleased with them). Why Muslims organize and practice the following? The following practices and celebrations were never organized by Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), neither by his noble companions and nor by any scholar in the history of Islam except until recently. However, Eid-Milad-un-Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) has been in practice for the last thirteen centuries and has never been disputed by any scholar of Islam until the Zionists and the Crusaders occupied Muslim countries and made them colonies in 1800s/1900s. Eid Milad un Nabi has been made controversial during the last century. It had never been a controversial issue.  Those who call Eid Milad un Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) Bid’a let me share with you their BID’As.  Why their actions and practices are not called Bid’a?

The Bid’a (distortion) Committed by the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him)

  • Bid’a Number 1: The only worldwide gathering of Muslims commanded by Allah and practiced by Prophet Muhammad and his companions (Peace be upon them) is Hajj. There is NO other international (worldwide) gathering of Muslims in Islam. Where do you find a verse in Qur’an or a Hadith to organize worldwide gatherings of Muslims in the name of TABLEEGH? In Pakistan and Bangladesh the annual TBALIGHEE IJTIMA’ attracts more Muslims than Hajj. Isn’t this a Bid’a? When did the Prophet (Peace be upon him) OR his companions OR Muslim scholars organize the worldwide gatherings of Muslims in the name of Tableegh?  Worldwide Tableeghi Ijtima was started few decades ago by the founder of the Tableeghi Jama’t in India, Maulana Ilyas Gujrati.  But Eid Milad un Nabi has 13 hundred years of history. Just like Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him), the Tableeghi Ijtima’ has a fixed annual date. People participate, pray and learn Islam in both gatherings. Why Tableeghi Ijtima is not a Bid’a but Eid Milad un Nabi is Bid’a?
  • Bid’a Number 2: In Pakistan (1970s) former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto invited the Imam of Ka’ba to visit Pakistan. When Imam Ka’ba, a fierce opponent of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi, came Pakistan Muslims abandoned mosques and prayed Friday prayers in large stadiums behind him. Was there any precedence in Islam for such gatherings? Prophet (peace upon him) and his companions (Peace be upon them) never did such a thing. Never happened before in the history of Muslims that Muslims emptied mosques and prayed behind an Imam because he came from Saudi Arabia?  That was definitely a new thing. It was a big Bid’a? Why no Fatwa was issued against the Imam of Ka’ba and all those who prayed behind him.
  • Bid’a Number 3: The scholars, Ulema and students of Dar-ul-Aloom Deoband (one of the oldest Islamic universities in India) celebrated the 100th anniversaries of the Dar Al Aloom Deoband. The 100th birthday of Dar-ul Aloom Deoband was celebrated under the leadership of a Hindu Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Did Prophet or his companions ever celebrate the anniversary of Masjid Al Quba, Masjid Al Nabawi, etc.? Talk about inviting a “Mushrikah” (pagan) to preside over the gathering of Ulema-e-Islam. Wasn’t that a Bid’a? It is obvious that the haters of Eid Milad un Nabi have more love and respect for their Dar Al Aloom and pagans than the birthday of Prophet of Islam (Peace be upon him).
  • Bid’a Number 4: Few years ago in UK, the Ahl-e-Hadith party held TOWHEED-O-SUNNAT conference and invited Imam Ka’ba and many other scholars. They do this every year. Did Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) or his noble companions (Peace be upon them) ever organized a program called TOWHEED-O-SUNNAT Conference and traveled to speak at a conference? Why Towheed-o-Sunnat conference can not be declared Bid’a?  The Salafis (self appointed Ahle Hadith) commit more Bid’a and deny more Hadith than any other sect within Islam.
  • Bid’a Number 5: Whenever Muslims get upset on an issue or conflict, they take out processions and rallies to protest. Muslim leaders and scholars of Islam address those rallies. Among the organizers and the leaders of those rallies are those who consider Eid-Milad-un-Nabi Bid’a. I ask them a very simple question. Did Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his companions OR the noble scholars of Islam ever took out rallies and banners protesting against an aggression or a conflict or an issue? Were there any rallies organized by Muslims when Al Quds was captured by Crusaders? Where is the basis of these rallies in Qur’an, Hadith and in the history of Islam?  Aren’t these rallies Bid’a?  The haters of Eid Milad un Nabi invite Muslims to attend their rallies. They say,” taking part in these rallies is Jihad and participants will be rewarded by Allah”. But if a rally to create awareness about our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) is organized, it becomes Bid’a. What a shame!
  • Bid’a Number 6: During 1970 elections in Pakistan Jamat Islami took out major processions in the name of Youm-e-Shawkat-e-Islam. This name itself undermines the religion of Islam. Everyday is Youm-e-Shawkat-e-Islam not when Jamat Islami contests elections. When did the Prophet and his companions organize Youm-e-Shawkat-e-Islam? Wasn’t that Bid’a? Did anybody issue Fatwa against those large processions? They were all done in the name of Islam.  People were expected to get rewards from Allah for their contribution and participation.  But participation in the procession of Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) is called Bid’a?  No wonder the followers of Abdullah Ibn Obai do exist in our times too.
  • Bid’a Number 7: Saudi Arabia does celebrate Youm-ul-Watani (National Day of Saudi Arabia). Television stations telecast special programs and newspapers print special editions and private companies give their employees a day off. I have never seen any Saudi scholar’s fatwa against the celebration of Saudi National Day. But they are very quick in giving Fatwa against Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. Did Prophet (Peace be upon him) OR his companions (May Allah be pleased with them) ever celebrated the establishment of the Islamic state of Madinah?  Saudi scholars, who oppose the celebration of Prophet’s birthday, gave Fatwa for justifying US troops in Saudi Arabia but they can not issue a Fatwa against the Bid’a that is committed by their own government and by them. That is a real distortion of Islam.
  • Bid’a Number 8: In North America, ISNA, ICNA, CAIR and many other Muslim organizations organize their annual conventions. In most cases people have to purchase tickets to listen to the speeches of various scholars. Isn’t this entire setup a Bid’a? When did Prophet (Peace be upon him) OR his companions (Peace be upon them) OR scholars of Islam after them organize such conventions? Why people have to pay in order to listen to the speeches of the scholars of Islam? Where is the basis for this? Did Prophet (Peace be upon him) charge fee for his speeches? Any companion of the Prophet ever asked people to pay for a good cause first before he would deliver his speech?  Off course not. Those noble people never did such things but it’s OK for the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi. Indeed, it’s a major Bid’a but they won’t call it Bid’a; otherwise, they have to close their shops.
  • Bid’a Number 9: The very concept of forming organizations such as Jama’t Ahl-e-Hadith, Party of Salafis, Jama’t Islami, WAMY, Rabita Aalm-e-Islami, ISNA, ICNA, CAIR is a Bid’a. Neither Prophet nor his companions (Peace be upon them) ever formed organizations and named them. The only name for worldwide Muslim body is “Muslims”. Only Allah divides people into tribes and nations for identification. These opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) have divided the Ummah. What a worse Bid’a they have committed?
  • Bid’a Number 10: A Pakistani woman who has now moved to Canada but still operates in Pakistan considers herself a scholar of Islam. She gives fatawa not only against Eid-Milad-un-Nabi but against many other Islamic traditions such as Qur’an reading in congregation (Qur’an Khawani), etc.. She organizes prayer get-togethers for woman only. She organizes Salat-at-Tasbeeh get-together for women only. She organizes Taraweeh prayers for women only. She has invented many things in Islam for the sake of women but for her Eid-Milad-un-Nabi is Bid’a? Where she finds basis for her style of preaching Islam? She organizes gatherings of women against the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), which is a worse form of Bid’a. She has destroyed many families in the name of Islam.  She has converted many Muslim women into fanatics. Her entire organization is a Bid’a.
  • Bid’a Number 11: Today, in North America Muslim associations organize fundraising dinners for mosques, Islamic schools or for humanitarian purposes. They sell tickets and invite speakers. When Prophet or his companions (Peace be upon them) raised funds through fundraising dinners? When Prophet or his companions (Peace be upon them) sold $5, $25, $100, etc. food plates for a good cause. Isn’t this all Bid’a? They organize these fundraising dinners which benefits them but the celebration of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him) hurts them.  Wow!

An Urdu poet wrote;

HAM AAH BHEE KARTAY HAIN TO HOJATAY HAIN BADNAAM

WHO QATL BHEE KARDAYN TO CHARCHA NAHEE HOTA

Translation: If I just say “ouch” when pained I get defamed

And they commit murders but no one objects to them

If celebrating the birthday of Prophet (peace upon him) is an innovation (Bid’a) because neither Prophet (peace upon him), nor his companions ever celebrated Prophet’s birthday, then why the following Bid’a (innovations) were created centuries ago and why everybody practices them today?  Why the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace upon him) do not condemn them and stop practicing them immediately.

  • Bid’a Number 12: When Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) , it did not have thirty volumes. Neither Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) nor his noble companions divided Qur’an into thirty volumes (siparah). Qur’an was divided into thirty volumes by the rulers and the scholars hundreds of years later for the convenience of HUFFAAZ (memorizers of the holy Qur’an). It helped HUFFAAZ in managing the recitation of the holy Qur’an in Taraweeh prayers in Ramadan.
  • Bid’a Number 13: Neither Prophet (peace be upon him) nor his noble companions ever put Rukoo and their numbers in the holy Qur’an. These Rukoo were added in Qur’an by the rulers and the scholars hundreds of years later to help Imams and HUFFAAZ in memorizing the verses of the Qur’an and provide better organization and management for reading Qur’an in regular daily prayers and Taraweeh prayers of Ramadan.
  • Bid’a Number 14: During the time of Prophet (peace be upon him) there were no A’RAAB (Fatha/Kasrah/Dhamma / Zabar Zer Pesh) in the holy Qur’an. These were added in Qur’an by the command of a very ruthless and cruel Muslim ruler, Hajjaj Bin Yousuf.  The A’RAAB were inserted in the Qur’an in order to help non-Arabs to read Qur’an correctly. Today, Arabs and non-Arabs both depend on these A’RAAB in order to read Qur’an correctly.  These A’RAAB were an innovation. But if this innovation is removed from the Qur’an, the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him) would not be able to read Qur’an correctly.  They need this innovation but not Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him).
  • Bid’a Number 15: In Islam, for a Muslim, moving to a non-Muslim country from a Muslim country is allowed in three situations only. 1) When a Muslim is persecuted in his/her own Muslim country and facing dangers to his/her life.  2) When a Muslim wants to preach Islam in a non-Muslim country. In other words, you have to be a Muslim Missionary in order to settle in a non-Muslim country. 3) When a Muslim wants to get education which is not available in a Muslim country.  Islam does not allow Muslims to leave Muslim countries and settle in non-Muslim countries except under the above mentioned three conditions. Neither Prophet (peace be upon him), nor any companion of Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to non-Muslim countries for “better economic opportunities”.  They migrated to non-Muslim countries under the above mentioned three situations ONLY.  However, one of the most widespread and desirable Bid’a committed by the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him) is to find better life in the non-Muslim countries. In fact, the immigration to non-Muslim countries by the Muslims is so desirable and desperate Bid’a that Muslims pray to Allah to help them in committing this Bid’a.  Allah knows very well the hypocrites.

§        The Biggest Deception

One of the biggest misconceptions of our time is that the Muslims look at the Imams and the clergy of Makkah and Madinah as the true and correct scholars of Islam.  They believe whatever the Imams of Masjid Al Haraam and Masjid Al Nabawi Sharif say, “can not be wrong”.  They are the Imams of the Holiest Mosques in the entire world.  Since these Imams do call Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) a Bid’a; therefore, it must be a Bid’a. The Mufti of Saudi Arabia must be the most knowledgeable scholar.  His Fatwa should be the most authentic.

If this is the standard then let me draw your attention towards history.

Ottomans (Sultanat-e-Usmania) ruled Makkah and Madinah and the most of the Muslim world for seven centuries.  For seven centuries the Imams of Masjid Al Haraam and Masjid Al Nabawi Sharif used to organize, celebrate and lead the celebrations of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him). Eid Milad un Nabi has always been celebrated throughout the Arabian peninsula before becoming Saudi Arabia including Masjid Al Haraam and Masjid Al Nabawi Sharif.  In fact, the largest gathering of Eid Milad un Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to be held in Masjid Al Haraam in Makkah.  This practice was stopped after the WAHABI revolution inSaudi Arabia. If you would have been born during the Ottoman Empire, you would have seen the biggest celebration of Milad Sharif in Haram Al Makki and Madani.

We MUST not change our traditions if the governments change.  Our traditions are based upon the holy Qur’an, the noble Sunnah of our Prophet (Peace be upon him) and the “Ijma” (consensus) of scholars of Islam.  If the government in Saudi Arabia changes today then what happens to the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi?  Will they start celebrating?

Eid Milad un Nabi unites Muslims and the denial of Eid Milad un Nabi divides Muslims.  The proof is in the 1300 years of Muslim history. When Muslims were together in celebrating the noble birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), they were all united but when they started debating the permissibility of Eid Milad un Nabi, they got divided.  It is not the celebration of Eid Milad un Nabi that divides Muslims. It is the denial of the Eid Milad un Nabi that divides Muslims.

One of the most deceiving arguments presented by the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) is that the National Days, formation of organizations and contesting elections are the matters of this world (Dunya). They are not part of the Sharia of Islam but those who celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) they do it as a part of Islam and the Islamic Sharia. Therefore, Eid Milad un Nabi is Bid’a because Prophet did not make it a part of Islam.  What a strange, deceiving and un-Islamic argument is this?

Holy Qur’an says;  O believers enter into Islam completely and do not follow the footsteps of Shaitan, surely he is your clear-cut enemy. (Surah Al-Baqara, Ayah 208).

It means for a believer there is not a single moment in life that can be outside of Islam OR Islamic Shari’a.  We Muslim believe that all actions of a believer such as work, family time, sitting with friends, husband-wife relationships, sleeping, even exercising and playing are all part of Ibadah (worshipping of Allah) as long as the believer does it for the sake of Allah.

Qur’an says, “Say: Surely my prayer and my sacrifice and my life and my death are (all) for Allah, the Lord of the worlds” (The Cattle 6.162).

It means for a Muslim every worldly or non-worldly deed must be for Allah.   Does this mean that when the haters of Eid Milad un Nabi carryout their  “worldly deeds” they do it for their sake, not for Allah.  They do not remain in Islam when they do “worldly” things because it will be encompassed by the Shari’a and they don’t want it to be seen as a part of Shari’a. I do not think that they believe this. Therefore, the above mentioned allBid’as of the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) are done for the sake of Allah. Therefore, they see their practices (which are in fact Bid’a) as SHAR’EE (legitimate). Then why Eid Milad un Nabi can not be considered SHAR’EE (legitimate)?

Conclusion

All this confusion was started from Saudi Arabia after the Wahabi revolution. Before Wahabi revolution in Saudi Arabia Muslims used to celebrate their beloved Prophet’s Birthday without any confusion or restrictions. Muslims are now traveling more for Umrah and Hajj and many Muslims from various parts of the world work in Saudi Arabia. They think whatever is practiced in Makkah and Madinah must be correct. Imagine, if you were borne before the Wahabi revolution in Saudi Arabia, you would have seen the celebration of Eid-Milad with your own eyes in Makkah and Madinah. Abbasees, Fatemides, Ottomans and others ruled Makkah and Madinah and the most of the Muslim world for thirteen centuries. During these thirteen centuries Eid Milad un Nabi had never been disputed by any scholar of Islam including Imam Ibn Taymiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) who is the most authentic jurist of Islam for Saudis. http://islamicsupremecouncil.com/milad-un-nabi.htm#a

If every innovation (Bid’a) would have been a sin in Islam then Ameer ul Mo’mineen, Sayyidna Umar Ibn Al Khattab would have NEVER used the word “Ni’matul Bid’a” (beautiful innovation) for the Taraweeh prayers in congregation.

The Wahabi revolution was one of the major causes for the fall of Khilafah Al-Islamiyah. In the entire Muslim world Saudi Arabia is the only country where Eid–Milad-un-Nabi has been officially stopped. However, millions of Saudis do celebrate Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him) inside their homes due to the fear of persecution from the Mutawwas (the Wahabi civil militia).  If you look at the beliefs and practices of KHAWARIJ who killed thousands of companions and the Ahlul Bait of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), you will find a very close resemblance between the KHAWARIJ and the opponents of Eid Milad un Nabi (peace be upon him).

Please read the Travel Story of Ibn-e-Batuta (Safar Nama Ibn Batutah) . He has described the eye-witnessed celebration of Prophet’s Birthday in Makkah inside the Haram and the city. Ibn-e-Batuta was just a traveler. He wrote what he saw in Makkah.

We must not pay attention towards the FITNAH created by the misguided and fanatics. Let’s go back to the Islamic traditions – the traditions practiced by all Muslims except the people who became the agents of Zionists and Crusaders.

I request all of you to celebrate the Birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) with utmost enthusiasm and devotion.

WE MUST SHOW THE WORLD THAT WE LOVE MUHAMMAD (PEACE BE UPON HIM) MORE THAN OUR OWN PARENTS, OUR OWN CHILDREN AND OUR OWN LIVES.

Let’s make a commitment on the Birthday of our HABEEB (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) that we will follow his teachings for the rest of the year and during the remaining period of our lives. We will pray five prayers because Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved to perform the daily five prayers. We will do what he liked and we will stay away from what he (Peace be upon him) forbade.

Imam Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani (Rahmatullah Alaih), in his book al-Durar al-kamina fi `ayn al-Mi’at al-thamina, mentions that Allama Ibn Kathir (Rahmatullah Alaih), a muhaddith from among the followers of IbnTaymiyya, “in the last days of his life wrote a book entitled Mawlid Rasool Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam), which was spread far and wide. That book mentioned the permissibility and recommendability of celebrating the Mawlid.”

Ibn Kathir’s book was edited and published in 1961. In it he says, p. 19: “The Night of the Prophet’s birth is a magnificent, noble, blessed and holy night, a night of bliss for the believers, pure, radiant with lights, and of immeasurable price.”

May we live as the true lovers of Rasool-ullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) and may we die in the love of Rasool-ullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). Ameen
